Entrepreneurship for Good
Many entrepreneurs have embraced the idea of the American Dream, but few have fully embodied its spirit quite like polymath Pedro David Espinoza. Well-versed in a wide range of disciplines, including technology, philanthropy, leadership, sports, business, music, entrepreneurship, and the arts, Espinoza is a Peruvian-American entrepreneur who believes in using innovation and education to drive lasting impact. His culturally intelligent approach to leadership has allowed him to bridge worlds, connecting corporate leaders with underserved communities and translating personal values into global change.
Turning Local Roots into Global Change
Early on, Espinoza wanted to understand how things worked. As a high school student in Peru, he interned as a mechanic one summer — an experience that gave him hands-on technical exposure and deepened his appreciation for engineering and problem-solving.
That same year, his interest in technology expanded when he volunteered to help build the first-ever library and computer lab in Pampas Grande, a remote, underserved village nestled high in the Andes, ten hours from Peru’s capital of Lima. Led by his mother, an engineer and founder of the nonprofit Pan Peru, the initiative was simple in its execution but far-reaching in its impact.
With limited infrastructure and scarce resources, Pampas Grande reflected the uphill challenges faced by many rural Latin American communities. But amid the poverty and limited means, Espinoza saw something more powerful: An area rich in human potential.
Through Pan Peru’s library and computer lab, children who had never touched a keyboard were suddenly learning to code, teachers were accessing digital curricula for the first time, and most importantly, students, especially young girls, began to imagine futures far beyond what they thought was possible.
The Pan Peru project wasn’t just about bringing in the hardware necessary to open up a new world of technological possibilities to the people of Pampas Grande; it was about changing mindsets and reframing dreams.
“I saw young girls change their mindset,” Espinoza recalls. “They went from only ever knowing life on the farm to aspiring to be engineers, entrepreneurs, and scientists.”
Pan Peru’s efforts extend beyond just helping the children of a poverty-stricken region. The project also aims to build confidence, a sense of agency, independence, and direction in the women of Pampas Grande. Pan Peru trained Andean women in product design, product ideation, and entrepreneurship through workshops. Now, women who had once been relegated to working in the fields were applying their traditional artisan skills, creating products from alpaca fiber. What resulted were small, sustainable businesses, led by these creative women, that inspired them to envision a different future for themselves and their families.
Building bridges between individuals, communities, and companies
Inspired by the changes he witnessed in Pampas Grande, Espinoza began to view education and technology as more than just tools — they were powerful equalizers, bringing promise to areas that had long languished in poverty and a lack of hope. What had started as a small-scale tech initiative in a rural area soon became a lifelong commitment for Espinoza, much like it had been for his mother. He knew he wanted to find a way to continue blending innovation, equity, and entrepreneurship for the greater good.
With the fires of inspiration stoked, Espinoza set out to scale his efforts. He has since mentored thousands of students and aspiring entrepreneurs throughout the Americas, offering pro bono coaching, leadership training, and insider access to the often elusive tech industry. His mission remains rooted in the same core belief that opportunity, once shared, multiplies.
This message of opportunity became the foundation of Espinoza’s 2017 TEDx Talk, “Build the Bridge,” which explored the importance of networking and how meaningful change emerges when communities, companies, and individuals collaborate toward a common goal.
What began in that rural mountain village soon caught the attention of companies seeking inclusive, values-driven leadership. Espinoza was more than ready to meet the moment. As his grassroots work gained traction, so did his influence in the corporate world, and he soon launched a multi-industry diversity initiative that has reached over 300 companies to date, including global leaders in finance, tech, automotive, and consumer goods.
Through his keynote speeches, books, and executive workshops, he’s helped corporate audiences understand the business case for inclusion and how values-driven leadership can deliver measurable impact.
From local roots to global reach
Through all of his outreach, Espinoza has shown a remarkable ability to connect people and places. His network spans multiple industries across the globe, and the impact of his initiatives has been felt in mountain villages as well as in the boardrooms of global companies.
Espinoza is not content to simply keep these connections to himself, however. He has become adept at leveraging these multifaceted relationships and creating mentorship opportunities for disadvantaged students, and giving back to the communities that shaped him. Many Fortune 500 companies that have tapped Espinoza to speak at their events or meetings have also invested in his outreach programs, including grants to build water reservoirs for Pan Peru, corporate venture capital investments in Espinoza’s startup portfolio, and grants to plant more trees and build libraries through Pan Peru.
The entrepreneur and philanthropist has developed a knack for blending purpose with results, and it’s a gift that extends beyond impactful speeches or meaningful mentorships. Espinoza wants to continue building systems that have a global impact, reaching an increasing number of people year by year.
As Espinoza’s understanding of philanthropy and corporate responsibility deepened, so did his resolve. He had seen firsthand how businesses could make a difference, and that passion led him to launch new ventures that not only reflected his values but also resonated around the world on both a micro and macro level.
Scaling momentum for the global stage
While studying at UC Berkeley, Espinoza took a key piece of advice from a scholarship (Cal Alumni Association Leadership Award) interview to heart and began to focus on scaling the work his mother had started. The result was SmileyGo, a tech-driven platform designed to help companies make smarter, data-informed social investments. By indexing over 1.5 million nonprofits and providing analytics on philanthropic impact, SmileyGo quickly grew into a global tool, now used in more than 30 countries.
Building on this momentum, Espinoza launched Pan Peru USA in 2018, expanding his mother’s grassroots nonprofit into a broader platform focused on education, entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability. His growing environmental leadership led him to the global stage in 2023 as part of the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org initiative, where he collaborated with CEOs, policymakers, and community organizations to explore climate resilience through reforestation.
Additionally, Espinoza’s books, including “The Real ROI: Return on Inclusion,” “Marcando Diferencias,” and “Differences that Make a Difference,” have become foundational resources in corporate DEI initiatives. He has delivered keynote talks at major companies including Oracle, Cisco, and Microsoft, influencing hundreds of multinational corporations and mentoring thousands of emerging leaders in the process.
Since starting Pan Peru USA and SmileyGo, Espinoza has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including The University of California Entrepreneur Winner in 2017, 2020 Best Business Book Award by Latino International for “Differences that Make a Difference,” Latinx Business Leadership Honors from the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and being named the “Robin Hood of Technology” by The Voice of America.
Running through everything Espinoza has done has been a thread of resilience. His path wasn’t always paved with accolades. Rejected from internships at several major consulting and tech firms during his freshman year, he didn’t let those early setbacks define his trajectory. Instead, he used the rejection as fuel and persevered.
Today, those same companies pay Espinoza five-figure speaking fees to train and inspire their senior leaders — proof that persistence, when paired with purpose, creates its own path.
Living with Curiosity, Discipline, and Purpose
Espinoza’s intellectual curiosity extends beyond technology and business. His life reflects a deep and continuous pursuit of learning, creativity, and balance.
A polyglot, Espinoza has learned to speak fluent German and conversational Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese, in addition to his native Spanish and English. A musician since childhood, he composed original songs and continues to play and write music as a creative outlet. He’s also a dedicated tennis player, practicing daily to maintain both physical well-being and mental clarity, exemplifying a work-life balance that values discipline as much as passion.
Though his calendar is booked solid and he has many irons in the fire, Espinoza has no intention of slowing down. Giving back isn’t just part of his mission; it’s the driving force behind everything he does. Having witnessed firsthand the transformative power of service, he remains deeply committed to expanding Pan Peru USA and building bridges that connect people to opportunity. At the heart of his work lies a powerful belief: education is the most effective weapon we have to fight poverty and unlock human potential.
“Education can foster a love for reading and the building of strong values among youth,” Espinoza says. “It’s the key to ending poverty and to building a better world.”
