Labour says it will use state bank to fund female-led businesses | Women in the boardroom

Labour plans to set targets for funding female-led businesses through the state-owned British Business Bank and to launch a review of the financial exclusion of women, if it wins the next general election.

The initiatives, which will be announced on Monday by the shadow City minister Tulip Siddiq, form part of the party’s financial inclusion agenda, following a review by 10 City grandees earlier this year of Labour’s financial services strategy.

Siddiq will reveal plans for two new performance targets for the British Business Bank (BBB), the economic development bank best known for overseeing Covid funding schemes during the pandemic. That will include an “overall investment allocation target” towards businesses led by women, as well as those led by ethnic minority founders. The BBB will also be required to issue reports on the diversity of applicants it considered for funding.

The size of its funding targets have yet to be confirmed, but will be set in coordination with the BBB, Siddiq’s office said. However, a 2019 report by the BBB found that only 1% of venture capital investment in the UK went to companies founded by women.

The funding pledge will be made at an event celebrating women in the City at the Association of British Insurers (ABI) headquarters on Monday, in front of an audience including women from across the insurance industry.

There, Labour will also promise to launch a review of female financial exclusion, which will be led by a committee chaired by a Treasury minister and involve other government departments, to identify the barriers to women reaping the benefits their male peers receive.

The review, which will also involve regulators and City firms, will be aimed at tackling poor take-up of financial advice and the root causes of the “gender pensions gap”, referring to concerns that a

Breaking barriers: UN Women and European Business Angel Network collaborate to boost women’s entrepreneurship and investment

UN Women and European Business Angels Network (EBAN) join forces to advance gender-inclusive investment in Europe. Within the framework of the new partnership, UN Women and EBAN aim to foster a diverse and gender-inclusive early-stage investment and innovation ecosystem in the region.

UN Women and EBAN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to leverage their support of women in investing business throughout Europe and Central Asia within the framework of the Women’s Entrepreneurship EXPO platform and the EBAN Manifesto for Gender Balanced Investing. The new strategic partnership aims to address gender imbalances within angel investment and promote diversity across the investment and entrepreneurship landscape. Together, they call actors to action to champion female entrepreneurship and gender lens investment.

Eliza Fernandez Saenz, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia a.i., stated that, “despite several efforts, Europe has not yet fully unlocked one of its most valuable potential assets: women entrepreneurs and women-led companies. As studies show, even if women make up over half of the European population, they represent only 34.4% of the self-employed and 30% of start-up entrepreneurs. That is why it is essential to recognize that investing in women and with women leads to stronger, more sustainable and inclusive economic growth.”

As part of the strategic cooperation, UN Women and EBAN will exchange best practices and combine capacity-building efforts to promote women’s entrepreneurship. They aim to increase the representation of women in European angel networks and raise awareness of women’s angel investing. Additionally, the partnership will pave the way for new research initiatives, facilitating knowledge-sharing to create an equitable playing field for women entrepreneurs and investors while offering valuable insights to policymakers.

Dentist leads focus elevating women Arab American business owners

Dr. Asmaa Abdel-Salam is a general dentist at Precision Family Dental in Garden City and leads the Arab American Women’s Business Council’s Director of the Small Business Development Committee.

“We help network female business owners and we provide services,” Abdel-Salam says.

She joined the Arab American Women’s Business Council as a member in 2020 and worked her way up the ranks.

Recently, AAWBC received a New Economy Initiative grant to assist small business owners in Metro Detroit.

“I’m approached by a lot of female businesses asking, ‘What do I do, I need this machinery. Who do I go to?’ And we formed this sort of branch so that we can connect these business owners with those resources,” she says.

Abdel-Salam also volunteers for various organization boards, including the Health Unit on Davison Avenue (HUDA)’s dental clinic. She’s honored to be an Arab American who’s able to give back to her community.

“I wouldn’t be in the position I am today if it had not been for my community, and when I say my community, it’s everyone — all races, nationalities, but specifically as an Arab American,” reflects Abdel-Salam.

Abdel-Salam recalls being one of the few Arab American women attending the University of Detroit Mercy’s dental program. Now there’s a growing population of Arab American dentists.

Abdel-Salam says she’s happy she can be a mentor and provide people with resources.

South Africa hears historic class action for lead poisoning launched by Zambian  children and women

The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg will continue hearing a ground-breaking case brought by Zambian children and women against the mining giant Anglo American, seeking compensation for lead poisoning, human rights groups announced today.

At the end of the 12-day hearing that opened on 20 January, the Court will decide whether to certify this unprecedented class action demanding that Anglo American South Africa remedy the adverse health impacts of its mining activities in the District of Kabwe, Zambia. If the case proceeds, it will offer a unique opportunity for residents of Kabwe to have a day in court and secure judicial remedies for the alleged human rights abuses associated with Anglo American’s business operations.

Residents of Kabwe have shown incredible resilience in pursuing legal action against a multinational mining giant

Candy Ofime, Researcher and Advisor – Business and Human Rights at Amnesty International

Amnesty International and the Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) were admitted as joint amici curiae (“friends of the court”) in August 2022 to brief the Court on international business and human rights standards and South African constitutional law relevant for the certification of the class action. The human rights groups stress that South Africa’s duty to regulate the conduct of its companies extends beyond its territorial borders and that Anglo American’s responsibility to respect human rights should inform the Court’s decision to certify this class action.

“Residents of Kabwe have shown incredible resilience in pursuing legal action against a multinational mining giant and should be afforded the opportunity to make their case before South African courts. Businesses have a responsibility to remediate the adverse human rights impacts of their activities. Remediation starts with a fair access to courts” said Candy Ofime, Researcher and Adviser on Business and Human Rights at Amnesty International.
